There’s a bit of irony to the story of my foray into the world of health insurance. Shortly after making the post immediately preceeding this, I was contacted by a guy I met online, while trying to grok the insurance game.

While trying to find his way through the insurance maze, he tried a bit of dabbling in web design. He had offered to help a prominent insurance pro with his web site, but soon found himself over his head..and so he called me to help.

I took over the task, became friends with the insurance professional and built several Sites for him, as well as conducting a major (successful) SEO campaign.

And the story doesn’t end there. The agent I mentioned, was so happy with the work I’d done for him, he turned me on to a man who had just begun an association of independent insurance agents. Long story short, I built the Site for the new organization as well as the Web Sites for a dozen or so of it’s members, with more calling daily. As the association grows, so does my business and I’ve become the Internet consultant to life and health insurance agents all over the country.

When I was a boy, my mom used to say,”sometimes when a door closes, a window opens”. I don’t know whether she was first to coin it, but, as proven here, it’s often quite true.

Obviously health insurance sales and I were not meant for each other. I oppose the whole concept and could not, in good conscience make a sale.

My moral qualms about the business were compounded by a situation whereby the best insurance company I represented, in my State, paid me far less than another carrier that I felt had an inferior offering. The commission on the better policy was not enough to live on, but I could not bring myself to sell the other when circumstances did not call for it.

Needless to say, I did not do well.

I began my career in health insurance back in November when I decided that the Internet Marketing game had gotten too dirty. After a few weeks swimming in the sewers of the health industry I longed for my old career and I’m happy to say, I’m back.

I got a insurance license a few months ago. Every time I reveal this professional twist, I’m embarrassed. I hate health insurance. I think the whole concept is immoral and the industry corrupt.

Understand, that for the most part, I am a capitalist. I’ve been self-employed for longer than most of my readers have been alive. I couldn’t live any other way, but I believe strongly that matters of survival should not part of that game.

If a mugger demands you turn over your wallet, or die, and you do so, is it then voluntary? Can he later claim the wallet as a gift? You have a choice when it comes to which jeans you buy, or whether or not you paint your home with the latest designer colors, but when you’re holding your chest, gasping for air, you can’t take the time to check your budget. Saving a persons life should not be part of the free market.

Health insurance must be single payer and universal.

I held these beliefs before I got my license and now that I’m in the business, I believe it more strongly than ever.

The fact that it costs a fortune to pay for something that you hope you will never use is bad enough, but now, from the inside, I see that the insurance companies not only hope for the same, but make certain of it, by insuring only those who statistically will be far less likely to use their services, by continuously raising rates until their statistically soon-to-need-to-use-their-coverage are forced to switch companies – where you’ll be rated up for anything you might have ever used, or excluding from coverage for any condition which may cause them to pay out any of the money they get from all of us every month.

When I think about all the unfortunate people who are forced into job slavery because their spouse, or child has a serious condition, or illness, which is covered under their existing employment group policy, but which would be automatically excluded from coverage should his policy change, or his job terminate; when I see the five clerical workers in my doctor’s office, who have no other job but to handle paperwork for the dozens of insurance companies and scores of plans, options and payment types, the agents, sub-agents, general agents, collection agents, brokers, carriers, insurers, re-insurers, all getting a piece and driving up the costs of this life and death pie, I want more and more for this new profession of mine to become obsolete.

I don’t know why I haven’t been spending more time (or any time) working this blog until now.

Instead I’ve put all my energies into two of my other blogs: Master of My Fate and Simplitudes. I’m proud of both, the latter being a joint venture with my ex wife, promoting the virtues of simplicity, and the former, a blog and mega site about self employment.

These Sites/blogs, may seem at odds. but they’re both about getting free and regaining some kind of control of one’s own life. One Site offers information on starting and running a business, while the other offers tips on eliminating unnecessary expenditures and superfluous bullsht.

I believe a combined application of both can help buy your freedom from the corporate overlords whose omnipresent control continues to choke the life from us.

This Site, along with Savage Visions, another Site I began and immediately neglected, are places that will permit me to vent and I really need to vent. These are weird days and I’ve got plenty to say.

But not now. Right now I’ve got to watch Keith Olbermann. He, along with Jon Stewart and Steve Colbert, are all that keep me from running screaming naked down the street.

Well the title says it all. I read almost all internet marketing <strike>scams</strike> offers, and even the best of the writers, somewhere in his overstuffed sales letter, makes an obvious statement, followed by the words “guess what?”
I stopped saying that in nineteen fifty nine. Stop writing that! Makes you sound like an idiot. Thing is, I think all of these IM money grubbing bastards follow a templated sales letter. They all attempt to emulate the success of the last guy who made a million dollars with a similar sales letter, using similar language and just repeat what they think works.

Maybe they’re right. I don’t phuqueing know anything any more, except that:
first off, lots of folks have laid out a good deal of money, making the author rich and
second, that writing those words make a person sound like an idiot.

Can’t blame them though. I wouldn’t mind being thought be an idiot,…for the right price. But guess what, I often do it for free.
